Obree Ayrshire Sportive - 4/8/13
Finally getting a chance to write up about this cycle last Sunday. Was up early and got ready and put 2 Wheeler into car and headed down the short distance to Auchincruive, just outside Ayr where this Sportive was starting and finishing.
I was in Group 4, leaving at 842am. - No 197 lol. Very specific. Left my bloody Garmin at home and was using runkeeper to record the route and was using that as my Sat Nav, as I had loaded the .gpx file onto it.
So we were off, via Coylton, to Crosshill near Maybole and left into the Galloway Hills towards Straiton before heading south for 3 of these 'Ayrshire Alps'. - Being honest I dont recall stopping for +27 miles, the ear phones were in, we had a nice cold breeze and some stunning scenery. As we got to the bottom of the route (See Map +33 Miles), we were stopped as some1 a bad smash, Ambulance etc was in attendance. Saw the bike looked a bit wrecked to say the least, hope guy was ok.
Stopped back a Straiton for a bit, water and food, then it was up towards Damellington, then on to my very local area, family- Patna, near Rankinston, out skirts of Drongan, Stair, (only 5 miles from home!), - This was pretty special, as it should that I did not have to travel to far to do something I really enjoy..
Time in saddle was 4hrs47, - Chuffed with that for a big lump like me.
Here is a copy of the Route
Thoroughly enjoyable Sunday morning out!
The Graeme Obree Ayrshire Sportive has established a reputation as a professionally run event, designed for cyclists looking to enjoy a challenging sportive. The Obree inspired sportive takes in some of Ayrshire's beautiful countryside and benefits from sections travelling across Ayrshire's rural road network. The course was designed by Graeme Obree and includes many roads which inspired him to get on his bike as a boy and were his training roads as he progressed to become one of Britain's greatest ever competitive cyclists.
There are two routes, a 48 mile and a 68 mile route. Both routes share the same start and finish location, but the longer route includes a loop into the Galloway Hillls and the climb of The Nic' of The Balloch. There is over 5000 feet of climbing on the 68 mile route and over 3000 feet of climbing on the 48 mile route. The event H/Q and start/finish, will be at Auchincruive SAC, Ayr, KA6 5HW
