>2010 Burns Supper

Image
>Well last night I enjoyed my 3rd burns supper at the Fairburn hotel in Mauchline. Guest of Alan Bell. Evening started sharp at 730pm with the piping in of the haggis by Euan Howie and the address was given as normal by Andy Copper. The immortal memory was given by retired teacher Michael Kidd regarding Robert Burns life as the 'Excise Man'. This revolved around his short career as the Tax Collector. Music was provided by Linton McMillan. A good night and a few bevys was enjoyed by the 60 odd guests. And of course a good meal lol.

The gang at Retro Thing have brought our attention to a republished 1983 Stereophile review of the Sony CDP-101, the first-ever CD player. The results were that the audio quality was promising but not stellar, and the $1,000 (!) cost of entry for the device made it even less alluring. Knowing how history unfolded, we can't help but chuckle a bit at the worry that CDs would in the near-term become obsolete by another physical disc medium, but hey, we can't blame them for not being psychic. Just think, one day our own reviews will be discovered for the future to laugh about -- paying over $500 for a device that doesn't do multitouch on its native apps? Wha...

> Well the Sky HD was installed after I spent an hour clear the path for the git and his bloody ladder. Phone went at 845am and I just thought by the tone of the tit on the other line that I was going to have trouble.. He informed me at the start if the snow was bad they would call the install off. GRR so I made sure it was clear as this was my 2nd attempt at getting it installed from earlier in year. Guy phoned again at 10am to tell me his van was stuck at the end of the road. Quite frankly I was not interested I was more interested in getting the work done. lol Shame on me. I said I would help him out after the work was done. After a few grunts and groans I could see him eyeing the level of snow in the back garden so I made some ‘pish’ up about other workmen taking the guttering down yesterday so that seemed to do the trick.. Its amazing what a tea and 2 choc digestives do. Guy rattled through the work and installed the old box up the stairs and the work was over in about...

>Holiday pending…

> Only got thurs and fri to work then off for a weeks holiday. After that I start in Irvine as Manager. The big question that I have been pondering is what to do on my week off. Always seems to be a recurring theme when I get a week off. In fact taking into consideration my search for work, and apart from the odd day off in my short stint at Home base, this is the first weeks holiday where I will just be chilling at home since November 2008. In July this year we went on hol for 2 weeks, as we were away I am not including this. what I mean here is purely being home.. free from work lol. As I have got older it is always on my mind to do something practical during my time off. I hate with a passion not accomplishing something. That might just be me, a sign of either being sad or getting older. I wonder what the days will be like in later life when I worry about the garden or that garage needing tidied. Well as its January, there aint much dosh until the end of the month to do a...

>Sky HD (Cont)

> So having done some research on the web for our pending upgrade to HD TV the reviews seen to be good. I was a bit concerned about the lack of channels but on reading these will increase over time. Who out there currently has sky hd? it it worth it? obv my reason for going for the deal today was value for money prob more so also that our current sky plus box goes upstairs for us in our room and more for kids.. I may look into way of extending the sky viewing into the kids rooms via some link via this box upstairs. We have a 40” HD Samsung ready TV so the first experience of viewing will be interesting especially through the surround cinema speakers in the living room… catch me gadget freak lol…. well if anyone has experienced HD tv let me know?

>Weather Sparks Supermarket Panic-Buy Damien Pearse, Sky News Online Shoppers are panic-buying provisions at supermarkets as they face heavy snowfall across the UK. Read more at www.skynews.com This country is going mad. When you read stories above that appear on sky news you wonder why this country has an inapt ability to deal with some snow. All over the world countries like the US and Canada, Greenland, Norway, Sweden etc deal with up to 4 months of this per year and temps of -35. We in UK can't handle a couple of weeks. Mad. I say UK get a grip. And bear it. There sorted. Ha ha!

>Google Unveils Nexus One 'Superphone' Last Updated 23:44 05/01/2010 Kirsty Donald, Sky News Online Google has unveiled its new smartphone in a direct challenge to the Apple iPhone. The internet giant billed the Nexus One as a "superphone" and the next step in the evolution of its Android software. Google worked with Taiwanese electronics firm HTC to make the touch-screen device. "I think you will see it pushes the limits of what's possible on a smart phone," HTC chief executive Peter Chou said. "It is very thin and feels good in your hand." Google engineer Erick Tseng said the Nexus One handsets are no thicker than pencils and no heavier than a Swiss Army knife keyring. "It is a great marriage of form and function. It is really light," he said. Tseng added that the new phones are built on the same Android 2.1 software that runs Droid smartphones but feature innovations such as 3D graphics and speech recognition. Google said it is...
