Western Isles - Day 3
After staying the night at the Berneray hostel, we were up at 630am for the short 2 mile cycle to the ferry port to catch the ferry to Leverburgh on Harris that takes around 1hr. As I left the hostel it was pitch dark, and after I managed to get the sheep to move, we were on our way...
The ferry was on time and pretty quiet. - Boarded and 1 hour later we were on the isle of Harris. Today's cycle was to take use to Stornaway and I was keenly watching the weather.
When we left I was a bit annoyed that my bright light had pack in, tried charging over night but clearly its broken. - rather irritating but hey ho it will go back..
We left Levenburgh and first port of call was to be Tarbert. - Some 30 miles away. We cycled around some really windy roads, mostly up hill and then the weather took a turn for the worse. - Freezing and wet we got to Tarbert pretty quickly, as you seem to pedal faster when its cold... We looked for a coffee shop or something to warm up, but christ everywhere was shut. - ended up getting a sandwich out a local shop and the usual flurry of activity on FB/twitter etc as we had 3G LOL..
Neil buggered off in front for a wee bit and we left Tarbert, next stop to be Stornaway, some 37 miles ahead. - When we left it was cold, windy but NOT raining. a killer of a double hill out of Tarbert nearly finished me but then we had some very long good straight roads where the speed was pretty consistent above 28mph. -
About 10 miles later boom. rain and jesus did we get wet. As we came down towards sea level, we had a couple of great descents, bit jesus the wind was mental - +35mph I was blown clearly into the middle of the road.
The rain was lashing down, and the mood was pretty low, - we were getting closer to Stornaway, then the rain eased for the last 8 miles or so as we entered Stornaway. - Went directly to the Heb Hostel where we were staying, and was let in by a kind fellow stayer- and we literally flooded the kitchen floor as we were erm a bit wet lol
Luckily there was dryer's in the place so we were soon sorted. - Later went for a bit to eat then enjoyed a few drinks with a crowd from the hostel. - chatting over what brings people to Stornaway in November ! lol Was a fun evening...
Soon, it was time for my kip and, yet another early rise for the ferry to Ullapool and another cycle to nearest train station....
