Cycling Ireland's Capital Cities Weekend
Last weekend me and Neil took our 2 wheelers to Belfast to attempt a 1 day run to Dublin.
Met him at my work on Fri and after I finished we headed done to Cairnryan to get the 1930 ferry to Belfast.
Arrived at 10pm and cycled the 5 miles into the city centre and our digs for the night. Went for a beer and some grub then heads down.
Next morning after a quick visit to the 1 and only Chain Reaction Cycles shop we headed off around 10am. By google maps directions, the journey was to be a personal best of 113 ish miles.
Set off ok, but as usual after 8/9 miles the usual thing that happens between us we split up. Guess what. Yip happened again.
I took the Newry Canal path and Neil well he still does not know what way. - we split up for around 35 miles ffs and randomly met at a roundabout just south of Newry 45 miles in.
Stopped at Drogenda for a bit to eat, 70 miles in, realising we still had nearly 50 to go and it was nearly 5pm, so was going to be a late 1.
The route was the R132 which followed the M1 side by side most of the way. What was good it was relatively flat and we were able to get some good speed up.
By time we passed Dublin Airport, it was getting dark. My legs were killing me, erse was sare, 110, 115, 120 was on the garmin, easily braking my previous 1 day best.
We got to our digs in Dublin around 935pm and I recorded a personal best of 124 miles. - wonder if I will ever beat that ?
Quick change and into the city centre for a few pints o the black stuff after 1 of the hardest days cycling I've done. (Funny I keep saying that ).
After 5 hrs sleep on Sunday we left for the 2.5hr train journey back to Belfast then Ferry back to Scotland.
A most enjoyable experience, and now the Hammy mobile can clearly say it's been everywhere in 2013 :)
