Goat Fell Walk, Arran, 1st April 2011
Decided to go to Arran and climb the Hill that I've stared at on a good day for the last 36 years lol. This was my first visit to Arran for 18 years. I left at 615 am for the 7am ferry to Brodick. The rain was on when I left but ever the optimised I hoped that it would clear on route. hmmmmm…
Ferry was fine, a bit choppy but on whole ok. I left the ferry port and looked for the signs for track to Goat Fell.. The rain was off, ground was wet but at the time was clear.. I headed out of Brodick towards the castle (2.5 miles) then I saw a sign for Goat Fell.
So far so good. Its a very pleasant walk on route up, as you get further up it get very rock but easy to do in fact. I actually found it sorer coming down than going up as you are always careful where to put your feet esp. if its been raining as I was to later find out.
As I neared the summit the weather turned horrendous. Driving rain and gale force winds which nearly knocked me over. I could see about 3metres in front and this was my experience of near the top lol.
I did not hang around long.. As I headed back down I got an eerie feeling I was going a different way. I kept going following a path that took me around some woodland and ahead I could see a road…
LOL- I came out in Corrie 6 miles north of Brodick so I thought WTF…. lol. I then walked along the road back to Brodick and straight to a pub for some hot food and a well deserved beer.
Great day, despite the weather and some good exercise lol….
Next time I’ll go on a clear day…
